The Last Hometown – Original Working Script.

Just for fun… Thought I would post the script that I had put together for the first episode of the podcast… Not how it ended up put together in the end. Made changes in editing when I found that things flowed better in another order… but still a fun little look.

FLASHBACK

It is 1972. This year saw the execution of 11 Israeli atheletes at the Olympics. The Supreme Court ruling against the Death Penalty. President Nixon was about to get caught up in the Watergate Scandal as five men were arrested for breaking into the DNC headquarters. MASH and The Price is Right premiered on TV and pay Cable was born with the launch of HBO and as the year limped to a close a movie about a little boat with a problem made its way to the big screen!

SPOILER WARNING!

Hey there, This being a podcast about Disasters in the Mass Media means that there are bound to be spoilers… so this is your one and only warning… If you do not like spoilers than maybe turn back now. In addition, I dont do Trigger Warnings. It is up to you to look at the episode description and deceide if this is something that might upset you! Having said all that… Welcome, to the Last Hometown.

THEME

There have been movies about disasters almost as long as there has been stories put to film. One of the earliest recorded ones being the 1901 film Fire! By James Williamson. It was in the 1970’s though that the genre really exploded. With the release of Airport in 1970 and trend would take Hollywood by storm giving us Earthquakes, Fires, Shipwrecks, plane crashes and so many more… Today we celebrate the new year with one of them… one that takes place on New Years Eve aboard the S.S. Poseidon. So put on your lifejacket, and walk up the gang-plank to join the maiden voyage of The Last Hometown!

INTRO

I have to be honest… This is not really the first episode. I recorded and put together another episode, what we will call a “lost episode” , It was about the made for tv movie “Where have all the people gone”. I worked on it, re-cut it, re recorded it… did tons of stuff… but was never happy with it in the end. So for now it is up on the shelf with Cormans Fantastic Four… never meant to see the light of day.

But here we are now. In the official first episode.

In 1970 with the release of Universal Pictures film Airport the era of the Disaster Film was launched. Making $100.5 Million (that is an adjusted equivalent of right around $600 Million now) off of a $10.2 Million budget the studios saw a gold mine!

In 1972 20th Century Fox jumped into the game with the release of the aquatic equivalent. The Poseidon Adventure based on the novel by Paul Gallico and produced by Irwin Allen, the man who would become known as The Master of Disaster.

It was not smooth sailing for Allen getting the movie made. Originally given a budget of 4.7 Million, the studio pulled out on the eve of production. Having taken major loses on Huge Musical Productions they no longer felt big budget films were the way to go. It was only after Allen managed to arrange for two wealthy friends to guarantee half of the funding for the film that the studio once again gave the go ahead.

BEHIND THE SCENES

The Poseidon Adventure had a great cast for the era.

five of them were previous Academy Award winners:

Gene Hackman (Best Actor The French Connection)

Ernest Borgnine (Best Actor Marty)

Jack Albertson (Best Supporting Actor The Subject Was Roses)

Shelley Winters (Best Supporting ActressThe Diary of Anne Frank & A Patch of Blue)

Red Buttons (Best Supporting Actor Sayonara )

The movie also featured one of Leslie Nielsen dramatic roles as Captain Harrison.

Headlining the cast was Gene Hackman as the Reverend Frank Scott who would lead his survivors to safety…

Those choosing to follow him were…

Ernest Borgnine and Stella Stevens as Detective Lieutenant Mike Rogo and Linda Rogo

Red Buttons as James Martin

Carol Lynley as Nonnie Parry

Roddy McDowall as Acres

Shelley Winters and Jack Albertson as Belle and Manny Rosen

Pamela Sue Martin and Eric Shea as Susan and Robin Shelby

The Poseidon Adventure would end up winning two Academy Awards One for Best Original Song for the Morning After and another for Best Visual Effects as well as a BAFTA award for Best Actor for Hackman and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for Shelley Winters

The commercial failure of the 1979 sequel Beyond the Poseidon Adventure would be credited as being one of the final nails in the coffin of the Disaster Film trend of the 1970’s. The collapse of the trend would not stop hollywood from remaking The Poseidon Adventure twice though, once as a three hour made for TV event for NBC on November 20, 2005 and then as the theatrical movie Poseidon in 2006.

SUMMARY

Hell, Upside Down

At midnight on New Year’s Eve

the S.S.Poseidon was struck by a 90 foot tidal wave and capsized

Who will survive-in one of the greatest escape adventures ever!

So reads the tagline on the poster for the Poseidon Adventure…

The movie opens with the S.S. Poseidon making its last cruise to its decommissioning and than on to the scrapyard. In the desire to keep costs down and profits up on the scraping of the ship the new owners demand the captain go at unsafe speeds and against his better judgment. The night goes on as the passengers celebrate New Year’s Eve in the ballroom only to have the ship hit buy a rogue wave at the stroke of midnight capsizing the ship. In a world upside down the Poseidon Adventure begins.

THOUGHTS

So. Why Poseidon Adventure for the first episode… well…. odds are you are not listening to it the day it is uploaded, but this episode first appeared January 1st, 2018… In otherwords New Years Day. It only seemed fitting to feature a movie that for the most part takes place on New Years Day.

Poseidon Adventure is one of my favorite Disaster Movies from the flood of them that hit in the 1970’s. Nostalgia plays a big part in this. It happens to be the first genre movie that I have a memory of seeing. Growing up where I did there was a local station that on Saturday afternoons would play

COMING SOON

There are a couple of films that I hope to see this coming month. The first is a theatrical release… although I am not sure how wide of a release it will get, and I can almost guarantee that it will not hit any theaters around the nowhere land I live in!

I am a big fan of the zombie genre and the George Romero in particular. That is why it was such a surprise to find that there was a remake of Day of the Dead on tap for january 2018. This is not the first time they have made another Day of the Dead. In 2008 there was loose remake starring Ving Rhames and in 2005 there was a “sequel’ to the 1985 original titled Day of the Dead 2 : Contagium, both of which I view as disasters and find borderline unwatchable. Unlike those two though, this film looks to have some production value behind it, and the trailer makes it look like it might be a fun look back into the world of the dead.

TRAILER

And the second is the relase to home media on the 16th of January of Geostorm. The directorial debut of Dean Devlin (the producer of such theatrical masterpieces as the Independence Day films, Eight Legged Freaks and the widely loved and praised 1998 American Version of Godzilla starring Mathew Broderick.) Like most of his films this looks to be just another non-stop disaster flick with scenes of famous locations being destroyed and no real plot… in other words, my kind of movie.

NOW PLAYING

While writing the script for this episode I had the Rock Hudson movie Avalanche playing in the background… I would say that this was going to be the next movie on deck, but to be honest I am going to have to think about this one for awhile… On my reading pile currently is A Night to Remember by Walter Lord and DMZ Deluxe Edition Book One collecting the first 12 issues of the comic series.

CLOSING

So… that was the first episode… I know there are going to be things about this that I absolutely hate… like maybe everything between the beginning and the end… with the exception of the commercial break for the Based on a True Crime Podcast, which you really should check out! Hopefully you will stick around and see if I can get my feet under me and start putting together some quality content. In the mean time if you have some time and need something to listen to, check out the Retroist podcast. That podcast, more than any other has influenced me to create this and the way I am laying it out…
