Top Ten Childhood Toys

I stumbled across a blog awhile ago that listed their top ten toys they had as a kid growing up.

Made me want to do my own version of that list… Because I love lists.

I received the DareDevil Sports Van for my 10th birthday along with a Red bike with a big old bannana seat on it. I always thought it was cruel to have a birthday in September, because most of the times you would get your presents and then have to go to bed shortly after and have to go to school the next morning. That was the case with this set… I remember my dad busting me trying to sneak the motorcycle into my pocket to take to class…

1. The Flashlight Not only was a flashlight an awesome toy for playing in the dark... but after Star Wars came out it instantly became a lightsaber just by swinging it back and forth making woooosh! noises.

Space 1999

Today, September 13 2013 marks the 14th Anniversary of the day back in 1999 when Nuclear Waste stored on the far side of the moon exploded in a catastrophic accident. The resulting explosion sending the moon and all 311 inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha, hurtling uncontrollably into space.

Or so it was in the Classic Gerry Anderson ITV series Space 1999.

One of my favorite shows from childhood.

Turns out you can watch the show on YouTube…

Here is the Pilot episode showing that horrible day back in 1999.

Toys – Space 1999

invmcatjcpenny1976A little nostalgia…

One Christmas as a child I received the Space:1999 Eagle and MoonBase Alpha playset.

I was a little let down in the MB Alpha playset since I did not have any of the figures to go with it… But I loved the Eagle!

I played with that thing for hours on end! Then when the Star Wars figures started coming out it became even cooler!

My Red Snaggletooth and Jawa would fly that puppy around the house having grand adventures with an assortment of playmobil friends.

The Mattel Space 1999 is one of my top ten Holy Grail purchases after I win the lottery!

Making a Geek – Space 1999

One of the first real big influences on me was the Gerry Anderson ITC television series Space : 1999. Where I was living it would come on after the late news on one of the local stations. My mother, when we were very good, would let us stay up late to wait for our father to come home (he was working the evening shift) and watch Space : 1999.

I loved Space : 1999. I mean what kid wouldn’t it was SPACE! I always got excited when they would have episodes that involved them having to fly in the Eagles. One of my favorite toys when I was a child was my Space : 1999 Eagle that I got for Christmas. Every once in awhile I will look them up on Ebay and occasionally even bid on them, but never with a high enough bid to actually win one of them.

The idea of having an adventure flying off in the Eagle cockpit with Commander John Koenig and Doctor Helena Russell was always in my mind when I was playing. I couldn’t stop thinking how cool it would be to be up there in that space ship zipping around…

Even now, with how 70’s retro the costumes look, I love the look of the Moon Base Alpha uniforms. They all had that uniform look with the color coding that actually represented their job and responsibility (I mean look at Star Trek, the only thing the color ever really ID’d in that show is if you were going to die.)

Space : 1999 is and always will be the show that I will always think of as the start of my geekdom. I always think, when I am geeking out and thinking about such things, that if I ever got good at making comics and could reimagine someone else’s product that Space : 1999 would be it.
